Enjoy being single – it’s the best it’ll ever be!

Sarah had always been mad keen on horses, ever since an early age. And she had to admit it: she had been really lucky. She’d grown up in a family which had no money worries, with its own stable, and the biggest thing she had to be worried about every day was how many treats to give her beloved horse Sparkle. This is all true, by the way. And no, I am definitely not Sarah. But she is a friend of mine...a friend who had never really known what trouble was.

Then, when we were both 18, Sarah’s horse passed away. Sparkle was fine one day, and the next, almost, she was on her side in the stables. She was going and going fast.

But one day things did change...

After that Sarah’s grandmother Elspeth sat her down and talked to her about a few things. One of the things she spoke about was the equine insurance . Now Sarah was of legal age, it was her responsibility to sort things like this out. But at this moment, and quite understandably, insurance was the very last thing on her mind.

Elspeth grabbed her hand and it was cold. Even though Sarah said it felt cool and damp, she said that there was something intoxicatingly relaxing about it. She could almost forget about the grimness of the past few days and the realities she had been so suddenly lumbered with.

Then her grandmother said, “You need to make the most of being single. One day a dashing young man will come along and then things’ll chance, you mark my words.”

Sarah laughed. And again. Never had she seen any dashing men at the stables. She sometimes saw dashing men at equestrian events, but those were few and far between, and she had always been behind the fencing while they had been parading about, untouchable, too far away, impossible to really commit your emotions to.

But one day things did change. When Sarah had to sort out her beloved dead horse’s insurance, in fact. The guy who dealt with the stuff worked at a local office and wanted to come and see the place where his company had insured so many fine horses over the years.

And after that, Sarah knew she didn’t have much time to enjoy the single life. Her grandmother had been right, of course. She always was, not that Sarah minded this time!
